“Tech Day highlights how cruise lines are applying AI, connectivity and digital infrastructure at scale — with implications across the broader travel industry”
MIAMI, April 16, 2026 — Seatrade Cruise Global 2026 turned its focus to the future of technology on Wednesday, 15 April with Tech Day highlighting how cruise lines are emerging as one of the most advanced environments for testing and applying innovation at scale. Bringing together cruise executives, technology leaders and digital innovators, the day’s sessions explored how cruise is moving beyond adoption — using its scale and operational demands to shape how technologies are deployed in real-world conditions across the travel sector.

“Cruise operates at a level of complexity that makes it an ideal environment for testing new technology in real-world conditions,” said Chiara Giorgi, Global Brand & Event Director, Seatrade Cruise Global. “What we’re seeing is not just adoption, but application — with innovations being refined at sea and influencing how the broader travel industry evolves.”
The day opened with a forward-looking briefing from Technology Ambassador Ian Richardson, who outlined the key trends shaping cruise technology in 2026 — from artificial intelligence and digital platforms to connectivity and guest experience systems — establishing a framework for the discussions that followed.
AI emerged as a central theme, with a session moderated by Jacob Passy of The Wall Street Journal bringing together leaders from MSC Cruises, Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings, Holland America Line and Amazon Alexa to examine both the potential and the limitations of AI in cruise operations. The discussion focused on the importance of data foundations, system integration and the lessons learned from early pilots, reinforcing that meaningful impact will depend on how effectively AI is embedded into existing operations.
“These [AI] assistants can recommend something that a guest doesn’t even know they’re going to be a passionate fan of yet – they don’t know that they might like a particular type of cuisine, or that they might want some kind of different amenity that you offer or might enjoy a particular excursion,” said Emerson Sklar, Evangelist at Amazon Alexa. “We just wrapped up some new research with industry professionals as well as actual cruise [guests] that shows that the opportunity for [AI implementation] in the cruise industry is far more massive than it is in traditional onshore hospitality: up to 85% of those questions and tasks that a customer has can be automated with some sort of self-service solution.”
Connectivity and cloud infrastructure also featured prominently, as cruise lines move toward more connected, real-time operating environments enabled by next-generation satellite networks and hybrid IT architectures. Sessions explored how the shift from onboard systems to cloud-enabled platforms is transforming everything from operational resilience to guest experience, while raising new considerations around latency, redundancy and system design.
Across the programme, speakers highlighted the operational demands of cruise environments — and the role technology plays in simplifying and connecting them. From shipboard property management systems to digital supply chains, discussions focused on how integrated platforms and predictive tools are helping operators manage large-scale, fast-moving environments with greater efficiency and transparency. Supply chain innovation, in particular, emerged as a critical focus area, with leaders from MSC Cruises and Carnival Corporation examining how real-time tracking, predictive analytics and improved system integration are reshaping procurement and logistics across global fleets.
The day also reflected on how far the industry has come, with a session featuring early cruise technology leaders revisiting the evolution from manual systems and limited connectivity to today’s increasingly sophisticated digital ecosystems — underscoring the pace of change and the foundational role of innovation in the sector.
NOTABLE PARTNERSHIPS REINFORCE INDUSTRY PROGRESS
Multiple cruise lines also shared news on their latest developments, including Explora Journeys, who unveiled a landmark partnership that brings together the worlds of ultra-elegant ocean travel and high-velocity racing, announcing its position as the Title Partner of the Swiss SailGP Team. This strategic move further embeds the brand into a world of peak performance and international distinction, standing alongside its partnership with Jannik Sinner, the World No. 1, and its association with the Formula 1 Grand Prix de Monaco.
Seatrade Cruise Global 2026 continues through to April 16th at the Miami Beach Convention Center, bringing together more than 13,000 registrants and over 650 exhibitors from across the global cruise community.
