Join the World Thrombosis Day Campaign on October 13
OREGON–(BUSINESS WIRE)–#EyesOpentoThrombosis–October 13th is World Thrombosis Day. Inovia Vein Specialty Centers is joining other healthcare experts around the world to raise awareness about this important subject.
Thrombosis is a formation of blood clot known as Thrombus which forms and stays in blood vessels. Thrombosis can occur in the brain (known as stroke), lungs (known as pulmonary embolism) or in the leg veins (known as Deep Venous Thrombosis / DVT). “We specialize in leg vein health, and provide an important role in our communities in Oregon not only helping prevent blood clots, but also to diagnose and treat them,” said Edward M Boyle, MD, Founder and Director of Inovia Vein Specialty Centers.
Every week we see patients who have been impacted by blood clots in their legs and we understand how imperative it is to help get the word out about this condition so people are aware of what to look for and do if they are concerned.
“Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT) occurs when a blood clot forms in the deep veins of the body, most commonly in the leg. This can lead to potentially life-threatening complications if the clot breaks off and travels to the lung,” said Rachel Drgastin of the Inovia Vein Specialty Centers. “Most people are not entirely sure what a DVT is, how to prevent it, and how they are diagnosed and treated,” said Edwin Gutierrez, also of the Inovia Vein Specialty Centers. This is why raising awareness is so important in Oregon.
Facts and statistics:
- Thrombosis is the formation of a blood clot in a blood vessel.
- 1 in 4 people worldwide are dying from conditions caused by thrombosis. And, it’s a startling fact that up to 900,000 people in the United States alone are affected by blood clots each year; about 100,000 of those people will die.
- One of the most common forms of thrombosis is Deep Venous Thrombosis (DVT).
- Treatment can differ by patient but typically includes blood thinning medication to break up clots and prevent new ones from forming.
To prevent clots, individuals are advised to know risks and recognize symptoms, see a healthcare provider as soon as is possible if experiencing symptoms, and talk with a doctor about blood clots before any surgery or after any major injury. There are a variety of mechanisms to help minimize risks of blood clots, and to treat them if they occur.
