The City of Miami kicked off a traffic safety program that will reduce posted speed limits in select local neighborhoods from the municipal standard of 30 mph to 25 mph. The goal is to reduce speeding on residential streets and enhance pedestrian and motorist safety. Key elements of the program include installing more than 300 new 25 mph speed-limit signs, deploying additional Miami Police Department resources to the subject neighborhoods, and completing a detailed study of the program’s effectiveness to track progress.
“Cut-through traffic and speeding through our residential streets have become a concern in certain Miami neighborhoods,” said Miami Office of Capital Improvements Director Steven C. Williamson, whose department is spearheading the effort. “This program aims to improve road and public safety and quality of life for our residents. The City is committed to providing a real solution to this issue.”
The City studied average speeds in the City of Miami’s twenty-nine residential neighborhoods and analyzed police data on accidents and moving violations. The results, which were approved by Miami-Dade County, led to the selection of four neighborhoods for the first phase of the program. They are:
Silver Bluff/Douglas Park
Buena Vista
The Roads
Coral Gate
Miami’s Office of Capital Improvements will continue to lead the program as it rolls out in the coming months, working in close collaboration with the Miami Police Department. This month, the City will host informational public meetings in the neighborhoods selected for the program. The first such meeting will be held for Silver Bluff/Douglas Park residents on Monday, May 6, 2019 at 7:00pm at the Coral Gate Community Center, 1415 SW 32 Avenue, Miami, FL 33145.
