On Tuesday, August, at the invitation of President-elect Ivan Duque, Governor Scott will travel to Bogota, Colombia, to attend President-elect Duque’s inauguration. While in Colombia, Governor Scott will meet with Venezuelan leaders exiled in Colombia to express his support for freedom and democracy in Venezuela and to discuss further ways for Florida to continue to oppose the brutal regime of Nicolas Maduro. In Colombia, Governor Scott will also meet with Colombian-American leaders to discuss opportunities to strengthen the relationship between Colombia and the state of Florida.
Governor Scott has been a strong advocate for Latin America during his time in office. He has led trade and business development missions to Panama, Brazil, Colombia and Argentina, and has visited Puerto Rico seven times following the devastating impact of Hurricane Maria. Governor Scott has also stood in direct opposition of Venezuelan dictator Nicolas Maduro and his efforts to rob the people of Venezuela of their liberty. Working with the Florida Legislature, Governor Scott fought for and secured legislation to prohibit any state agency from doing business that benefits the Maduro Regime.
Last Tuesday, the Governor spoke with President Trump about two important foreign policy subjects – Cuba and Nicaragua. The Governor and the President discussed what the United States is doing to support the people of Nicaragua. On Cuba, the Governor asked the President to direct the Department of State to fully implement his Cuba policy to make sure that all Cuban military entities are denied any possible revenue from the United States.
