TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – During a meeting of the Florida Cabinet, Governor Rick Scott and Sam Seevers, Chair of the Volunteer Florida Commission, awarded John Chafin with the Volunteer Florida Champion of Service Award, Florida’s official statewide volunteer recognition.
Governor Scott said, “Volunteers in Florida serve our communities, enriching the lives of families across our state. I’m glad to award John Chafin the Champion of Service Award.”
Chair Seevers said, “Volunteer Florida is honored to present the Champion of Service Award to John and recognize his dedication to volunteerism. He has made Leon County a better place for all to learn, work and succeed.”
About the Champion of Service Recipient:
Originally from Tampa, John Chafin served as the Leon County Tax Collector for more than 20 years. Since his retirement in 2001, he has devoted countless hours to serving local citizens, especially those with developmental disabilities.
John is a member of the Everhart Excellence Foundation Board at Gretchen Everhart School for students with cognitive deficits and special needs. He has been instrumental in coordinating numerous fundraisers for the school and securing resources that allow the students to learn and grow.
In 2016, John was appointed by Governor Scott to serve on the Family Care Council, Area 2. The Family Care Councils advocate for individuals with physical and intellectual disabilities – as well as their families – identifying funding for support and other necessary services.
John has also served as President of the Leon Advocacy and Resource Center, further proving his commitment to opening doors that have long been closed for people with disabilities.
As an active member of the Tallahassee Lion’s Club, John raises funds to help cover the cost of eye examinations and eyeglasses for children, and he builds accessibility ramps for those who cannot afford to install them in their homes.
He exemplifies exceptional volunteerism, and he is an inspiration to his family, friends, neighbors and everyone in Leon County.
