MIA OPENS DREAMSCAPES EXHIBITION BY SOUTH FLORIDA PHOTOGRAPHER CHERYL MAEDER.

(MIAMI, September 19, 2016) – South Florida photographer Cheryl Maeder’s Dreamscapes series – a collection of striking images from Maeder’s early childhood, travel adventures and everyday life – is now on display at Miami International Airport’s Camera Works Gallery, near Gate D-22.

Maeder’s defining moment came while traveling through the Costa Brava coastal towns of Spain, where she began experimenting using her camera as a painter uses a paintbrush. Seeing the world through painterly eyes, she began to explore the relationship between the familiar and the abstract.

«These nebulous images invite us to challenge our perception of the world suggesting that the boundary between physical bodies may be an illusion,» said Yolanda Sánchez, Ph.D., Fine Arts and Cultural Affairs Director at MIA.

Cheryl Maeder is a fine art photographer and filmmaker born in Elmwood Park, New Jersey. In her early 20s, she moved to Zurich, Switzerland and studied photography at the Zurich University of the Arts. After eight years in Switzerland, Maeder returned to the United States and opened her photography studio in San Francisco. She relocated her studio to the Miami area in 2005. Through experimentation, Maeder’s explorations with her camera led her to the world of abstraction in both her photographs and video installations. Her photography work is in permanent museum collections, and her photographs and video installations have been exhibited internationally at major art fairs and in public art installations, including the Patricia and Phillip Frost Art Museum, Louvre Museum, City of West Palm Beach and Art Southampton 2015, among others.

The Dreamscapes exhibition continues the primary mission of the Aviation Department’s Fine Arts and Cultural Affairs Division to humanize and enrich the airport environment through the commission of contemporary artwork and the presentation of exhibitions in various media that communicate culture, environment and art resources of an international scope.
